When using the file > Open or file > Save As dialog in Microsoft Office, there are noticeable delays when typing in letters to navigate between files and folders.
For example, typing ‘F’ and ‘L’, there will be a delay in getting to the folder/file name beginning with ‘FL’. Sometimes the delay will find the first folder beginning with ‘F’ then skip to the folder beginning with ‘L’.
This only occurs when the Details view is being used. A workaround is to change the view so that it is in List view, the speed when searching for file/folders will perform as expected.
The cause and the fix
After investigating the issue with McAfee support, we discovered it was the anti-virus software's On-Access-Scanning feature (McAfee VirusScan) that was causing the issue. In particular, the scanning of .MUI files.
"MUI files contain resources that allow Windows interface to display different languages. While files with the MUI extension are mostly associated with the Windows Multilingual User Interface, they can also be created by an Open GL toolkit used to write OpenGL programs."
An anti-virus exclusion needed to be added for read/write access for .MUI files.
